<description><![CDATA[The poker community is once again turning its attention to the state of Nevada as a recently announcement made by the World Series of Poker suggested that it has plans to launch its real-money poker games in Nevada. If WSOP.com &#8230; <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/wsop/real-money-online-games-to-soon-be-launched-by-world-series-of-poker/1893">]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.poker-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/world-series-of-poker.jpg" alt="World Series of Poker" width="300" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1529" />The poker community is once again turning its attention to the state of Nevada as a recently announcement made by the <strong>World Series of Poker</strong> suggested that it has plans to launch its real-money poker games in Nevada. If WSOP.com gets the required approvals, then it could become the second online poker website in Nevada, <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/general/ultimate-poker-becomes-first-official-online-poker-site-to-launch-in-nevada/1887">the first being Ultimate Poker which launched</a> on the 30th of April. </p>
<p>Reports from WSOP.com suggested that the company has plans to launch its online software sometime during the <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/wsop/announcing-the-44th-world-series-of-poker/1773">44th annual WSOP series which is scheduled to take place on the 29th of May at the Rio</a>. If WSOP. com is able to launch as planned, then one can also expect to witness the next poker world champion emerging from a small buy-in tournament online. </p>
<p>In a statement, WSOP spokesman <strong>Seth Palansky</strong> said<br />
<blockquote>Certainly that would be our druthers. But we don’t remain totally in control of the process and timing of it all, so it’s hard to know. We intend to be in this business 100 years from now so for us, it’s not about when we start. We just have a lot of boxes to check off to meet the requirements, which is fine and it won’t be too much longer.</p></blockquote>
<p>The <strong>WSOP</strong> will push to get approval so that they can launch their online games at the earliest, mainly because they want the official launch date to start well before the commencement of the Main Event which is scheduled to take place on the 6th of July. This is mainly because more players can use the internet to try and win entries into the 10-day championship event by trying their hand via <strong>online satellite tournaments</strong>. </p>
<p>As of now, the WSOP is waiting to get approval from the <a href="http://gaming.nv.gov/">Nevada Gaming Control Board</a>. Reports from the WSOP officials also suggest that the WSOP wanted to make sure that they have a first class online product ready before launching in Nevada as they are well aware that although Ultimate Poker was the first to launch in Nevada, there are a number of improvements that need to be made to the online software. </p>
<p><strong>Ty Stewart</strong>, executive director of the WSOP stressed that online poker for real money would soon be launched by the WSOP. He went on to promise “<em>a comprehensive series of promotions and benefits</em>” on WSOP.com for all players who take part in live events this summer. </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.poker-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/talal-shakerchi.jpg" alt="Talal Shakerchi" width="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1892" />During the weekend, six players paid out 500,000 euros (£423,000) to get a seat at an unofficial game which took place at the <a href="http://www.europeanpokertour.com/tournaments/grandfinal/">final of the European Poker Tour in Monaco</a>. One of these players was Talal Shakerchi, who is reported to be a hedge-fund tycoon from the UK. </p>
<p>Reports suggested that during this unofficial weekend poker game, <strong>Mr. Shakerchi lost over £850,000</strong> before he walked away from the table. However, Shakerchi has a history of both losing and <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-games">winning large sums of money at poker games</a>. Reports suggest that in the last few years, Shakerchi has managed to play a number of live tournaments and walk away with more than £1 million in prize money. </p>
<p>This unofficial game of high stakes poker had a friendly ring to it as all players appeared to be friendly with one another. While Shakerchi lost a considerable sum of money, he is a wealthy man having established his own hedge fund called Meditor, prior to which he worked at Old Mutual. <strong>Talal Shakerchi</strong>, just like the other six players expected to win big when he paid out 500,000 euros to get a seat at the live event. However, luck was not on his side and he not only <strong>lost his 500,000 euros</strong> but soon went on to spend more and lose more. </p>
<p>When he walked away from the table, he reported had blown away more than £850,000. However, he was still in a good mood and promised the remaining players at the table that he would be back again to try his luck and see if he could recover his losses. </p>
<p>Commentator <a href="https://twitter.com/webjoker">Frank Op de Woerd who covered the game</a>, later sent out a tweet which said<br />
<blockquote>While they&#8217;re playing 100k+ pots the conversation is very friendly and all 3 of them are laughing a lot. Talal seems very unlucky and running very bad &#8211; can&#8217;t seem to win a hand. Talal Shakerchi: &#8216;<em>goodbye, see you guys tomorrow</em>&#8216;.</p></blockquote>
<p>While there were a number of guests around that table, not all of them were aware of how high the stakes were, nor were they aware of who the players were at the table. The six players included Shakerchi, one more British amateur and four of the world&#8217;s top poker players, who were battling it out for pots of <strong>one million euros (£848,225)</strong> at a time.</p>
<p>Shakerchi was born in the Midlands and has done extremely well in his hedge fund business. Based on the <strong>Sunday Times Rich List</strong>, he is estimated to <strong>worth around £100 million </strong>and is said to be extremely generous with his money and his philanthropic activities.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.poker-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/legal-us-poker-rooms.jpg" alt="Online Gambling becoming legal" width="300" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1341" />Online gambling in the US took a step in the right direction on the 30th of April, when the <strong>state of Nevada</strong> saw the <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/general/ultimate-poker-becomes-first-official-online-poker-site-to-launch-in-nevada/1887">official launch of the first online poker website, Ultimate Poker</a>. This is after nearly a 2 year ban on all online poker websites.</p>
<p>While this is a step in the right direction for poker players in the US, <strong>Ultimate Poker</strong> is still restricted in many ways as its online poker website can function legally only in the state of Nevada. This is because the US is more keep on legalizing online gambling websites on a state to state basis, rather than legalizing online gambling websites throughout the nation.</p>
<p>However, a number of states are now considering <strong>legalizing online gambling</strong> and next in line are the <strong>states of New Jersey and Delaware</strong>. Considering the size of the industry and the number of competitors, it will not be long before online gambling is once again thriving in the US.</p>
<p>The main reason why online gambling was banned in the first place is because there was a nationwide crackdown on online gambling and a number of top companies were forced to shut down their operations on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_%282011%29">infamous black Friday which took place during April 2011</a>. This also resulted in a number of key personnel from these companies being arrested, one of whom was John Campos. </p>
<p>In a recent statement, <strong>John Campos</strong> said<br />
<blockquote>My perspective on it is that [the law for online gambling] is still not clear. Until some of the states start to actually pass the laws and the banks start processing, it&#8217;s still pretty nebulous. I think there are still some questions as to implementations. I&#8217;m afraid to do anything in that area, because the federal government is scary.</p></blockquote>
<p>This is also another reason as to why there is still a bit of hesitation with some of the leading online gambling companies, who are still not sure if they want to deal with US players due to the strict laws imposed by the federal department.</p>
<p>However, as these laws get slowly relaxed and become even more transparent, more companies like Ultimate Poker will expand their online gambling operations in the US. <a href="http://www.goldmansachs.com/">Goldman Sachs</a> had estimated in 2009 that the American market for online casinos and poker was a <strong>$12 billion dollar industry</strong> and with the freeze on online gambling during the last 2 year, the US market has become even more lucrative. It will not be long before we see more online gambling companies start launching their operations, even if it means a slow state-by-state roll-out.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.poker-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ultimate-poker.jpg" alt="Ultimate Poker" width="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1888" /><a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-sites/us-poker-sites">Poker companies in the US will now be eagerly looking to kick start their operations</a> as <strong>Ultimate Poker</strong> became the first official poker website to launch in Nevada on the 30th of April. Ultimate Poker had all the required legal approvals and kick started its operations and started offering its games and collecting cash from customers who were in Nevada.</p>
<p>Ultimate Poker has done extremely well in the two weeks since its launch and the traffic stats have been impressive as they are rated as 39th on the rankings worldwide on <strong>Poker scout</strong>. One of the main reasons why these stats are impressive is because the state of Nevada has officially around 3 million residents only.</p>
<p>However, there are a few concerns about the software platform that Ultimate Poker is using to offer its online services. Due to the urgency to kick start its operations and also have an official product <a href="http://www.wsop.com/">ready to launch during the World Series of Poker</a>, there are a few issues with the software.</p>
<p>Users will have no problem visiting the Ultimate Poker website and signing up for an account. However, it then becomes a little difficult to verify your account as users have to provide a cell phone number to complete their verification process. The cell number has to confirm that you are officially within the borders of the <strong>state of Nevada</strong>. If for some reason this is not possible, then you will not be able to verify your account.</p>
<p>Some of the other concerns on the software include the inability to take notes on players within the client, no ability to resize tables or lobbies, no ability to save hand histories or view hands via a replayer and as of now <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-games/texas-holdem-poker">only Texas Hold’em is currently available</a>.</p>
<p>Yet when it comes to players funding their account and withdrawing their winnings, there are no issues. Those players who are close to Las Vegas have the option to make a deposit at any <strong>Station Casino</strong> location. Those who are outside the <strong>Las Vegas</strong> area will be able to make their deposits via bank wire, check by mail or instant check.</p>
<p>Since it is only a couple of weeks since the official launch, Ultimate Poker will be in the process of upgrading and fine tuning their software as none of the concerns are serious. In the meantime, all poker lovers in the state of Nevada will be lining up to try their hand at online poker.</p>

The board, which previously had five members, now has eight. Tab Duchateau, Jack Effel, and Neil Johnson have now joined the board’s existing members <strong>Dave Lamb, Matt Savage, Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, and Mike Bishop</strong>.</p>
<p>Widely acclaimed as the tournament director for the <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/wsop">prestigious live poker event World Series of Poker (WSOP)</a>, <strong>Jack Effel</strong> also holds the post of vice president (international poker operations) for Caesars Interactive. While <strong>Tab Duchateau</strong> is the tournament director of <strong>Borgata Hotel and Casino</strong>, located at Atlantic City in New Jersey, <strong>Neil Johnson</strong> is the head (poker operations) for PokerStars Europe.</p>
<p>TDA co-founder Matt Savage says that<br />
<blockquote>the entire (TDA) membership has come to greatly respect Jack Effel, Neil Johnson, and Tab Duchateau for their wisdom and hard work in support of the TDA Mission. They literally bring a world of experience to the board and will help lead the association for years to come.</p></blockquote>
<p>The TDA has over 2000 members from 41 countries all over the world and organizes a bi-annual summit. The next edition of this <a href="http://www.venetian.com/">summit will be held at The Venetian, Las Vegas</a> on June 26 – 27, 2013.</p>
<p>The purpose of founding the TDA was to bring about uniformity in rules governing live poker tournaments. The TDA’s poker tournament rules are discussed, modified, and improved upon at each TDA bi-annual summit. TDA rules are widely, though not mandatorily, used to govern live poker tournaments held at major venues.</p>
<p>The association comprises online poker room operators from different parts of the world, who aim at standardizing poker tournament rules. Those interested can read the Poker TDA’s tournament rules at pokertda.com.</p>
<p>Those who are interested to join the Poker TDA can do so free of charge. They only have to visit <strong>pokertda.com</strong> and complete a simple online registration form. Once they become members, they will be notified of all Poker TDA events, including the bi-annual summit. As members, they can also take part in the discussions at the Poker TDA Forum.</p>
<p>Registered members of the Poker TDA can also obtain a printable TDA certificate on passing the <strong>TDA’s Level 1 Poker Tournament Director Certification Exam</strong>. This certificate will remain valid either for a period of two years or till the TDA conducts another exam based on revised TDA Poker rules. The Poker TDA revises its rules whenever it holds its summit meetings.</p>

<p>According to Ivey, Crockfords, a land casino property at Mayfair in London, has not paid him the amount he won while playing a private Punto Banco game in August 2012. Considered to be the sixth biggest <strong>Punto Banco tournament</strong> earner in the world, Ivey’s Punto Banco winnings have touched the <strong>$14.6 million mark</strong>. Punto Banco is a baccarat variant. </p>
<p>Speaking about the issue, Ivey stated that he felt “<em>deeply saddened</em>” to move the High Court against Crockfords, but that he had no other choice. He said:<br />
<blockquote>Over the years, I have won and lost substantial sums at Crockfords and I have always honored my commitments. At the time, I was given a receipt for my winnings, but Crockfords subsequently withheld payment. I therefore feel I have no alternative but to take legal action.</p></blockquote>
<p>The 35-year-old poker pro visited Crockfords with his female companion in August 2012 and hit into a winning streak while playing <strong>Punto Banco</strong>. The aim of Punto Banco players is to create a combination of value nine or as close to it as possible with the intention of beating the house. Phil Ivey, who won close to £2.3 million on the first night continued winning on the second night, and when he had done playing, he had won as much as £7.3 million.</p>
<p>However, <strong>Crockfords</strong> owner Genting allegedly declared that it will have to withhold his winnings and investigate Phil Ivey’s game.</p>
<p>Accordingly, investigators from <strong>Kuala Lumpur</strong> flew to London to interview Crockfords staff, review video footage, and study the cards that Ivey used.</p>
<p>Many of Ivey’s fans have pointed out that Punto Banco is purely a game of chance, in which one plays against the house. Baccarat experts say that it is similar to roulette in that it is not possible for <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-strategy">players to use strategies to alter outcomes</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Matthew Dowd</strong>, Ivey’s legal representative, said:<br />
<blockquote>It is with great regret that Phil has been forced to issue court proceedings against Crockfords to secure payment of his winnings.</p></blockquote>
<p>Established in 1828, <a href="<a href=">Crockfords Casino is hailed as Britain’s oldest casino</a>, today owned by <strong>Genting</strong>, a gambling company based in Malaysia. While refusing to comment on individuals involved, a Genting spokesperson said that it is a rare case, adding that the company’s position has the support of “<em>strong legal advice</em>.”</p>

<p>The highlight of the GDAM will be a <strong>HK$1,000,000</strong> buy-in re-buy tournament with two re-buys worth HK$1,000,000. The poker community already calls it<br />
<blockquote>the biggest poker tournament ever held outside of the World Series of Poker in terms of prize pool as well as the largest ever high-roller event by number of players.</p></blockquote>
<p> On June 4, a HK$250,000 Warm Up Event will be also be held.</p>
<p><strong>Danny McDonagh</strong>, PokerStars director for Asia-Pacific live poker operations, said:<br />
<blockquote>This is going to be one of the most amazing poker tournaments of all time. We are expecting over 100 players to sit down and play and one of the biggest prize pools for a poker tournament outside of the World Series of Poker. It’s going to be seriously huge!</p></blockquote>
<p>The Guangdong Group organized a live poker tournament with a buy-in of HK$2,000,000 in Macau last August, a high-roller event that attracted a field of 73 players and generated a HK$182,360,000 prize pool. Prominent professional poker players such <strong>Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Sam Trickett</strong>, and others took part in this high-stakes event. Ultimately, it was <strong>Stanley Choi</strong> who won the first place prize of HK$150,149,000.</p>
<p>Guangdong Group CEO <strong>Winnie Strong</strong> said that the company is happy about organizing another high-roller live poker tournament, adding that the synergy between PokerStars and Guangdong Limited is very strong. She also expressed hopes that the event would be just as stunning and exciting as the previous one.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-room-reviews/pokerstars">online poker players can qualify for the event at PokerStars</a>. The online poker room will be giving away a GDAM prize package worth US$132,000.</p>
<p>Here are some of the big non-WSOP live and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker_tournament">online poker tournaments with prize pools generated</a> in brackets—the 2012 Macau High Stakes Challenge Super High Roller Tournament held in Macau ($23,511,128), the 2007 WPT Championship held in USA ($15,495,750), the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) held in Bahamas ($15,132,000), the 2008 European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final held in Monaco ($13,323,417), the 2011 PokerStars 10th Anniversary Sunday Million held on PokerStars.com ($12,423,200), and the 2007 World Poker Tour (WPT) Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic held in USA ($9,661,200).</p>

While &#8230; <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/gambling/last-leader-board-promotion-ends-at-party-poker/1880">]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.poker-online.com/images/reviews/party-poker/Party-Poker-review-Logo.jpg" class="alignleft"><a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-room-reviews/party-poker">Party Poker’s last leader board race will come to an end</a> when the present weekly competition concluded on <strong>May 5</strong>. The online poker room has made an announcement about the promotion’s last days on its main leader board page. While Party Poker’s monthly leader board promotion came to an end in April, the weekly leader board concluded on Sunday.</p>
<p>The online poker site has promised that it will replace its leader board promotion with<br />
<blockquote>a more varied range of tournament-based promotions in the future.</p></blockquote>
<p>The company, which once used to call itself the world’s favourite online poker site, has now stated in its annual report that poker is its biggest business risks. Party Poker’s business performance has been poorer than those of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_poker">other online poker companies during the past fiscal year</a>, owing to which it had decided to stop operating in some markets and focus on its strongest points.</p>
<p>Party Poker had withdrawn from 18 South American and EU countries, such as <strong>Cyprus, Romania, Poland, Serbia, Finland, and Greece</strong>, last year. On April 30 last year, the company blocked new players from registering at <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-room-reviews/bwin-poker">online gambling products operated by Bwin.party</a>. The company also sent an email to its affiliates requesting them to remove all related marketing material from their sites. Existing players were allowed to continue using their accounts. A few of the EU countries from which Party Poker withdrew had unfriendly online poker laws.</p>
<p>Now that Party Poker has ended its leader board promotion, it plans to focus on catering to the requirements of its recreational players, which will frustrate its high-stakes and professional players. The online poker site has made several changes such as cancelling its <strong>bad beat jackpot</strong>, removing the top-most tier of its VIP program, and implementing a policy of player segregation.</p>
<p>A Party Poker spokesperson had tried to explain the online poker room’s player segregation policy, though in rather vague terms. The spokesperson had confirmed that the company is testing a brand new feature, in which poker tables will be graded and new players will be separated from existing players to give them better chances of winning.</p>
<p>Party Poker had publicly announced that it is <em>“testing various features to make poker more fun and entertaining”</em> and is trying to devise ways to enable <em>“players of a similar ability”</em> to play together during the initial phases of their stay at Party Poker. However, the upgrade is yet to be launched.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.poker-online.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/mgm-resorts-international.jpg" alt="MGM Resorts International" width="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1879" /><strong>Dan D’Arrigo</strong>, CFO for <a href="http://www.mgmresorts.com/default.aspx">MGM Resorts International</a>, said that MGM is still mulling over the pros and cons of launching an online poker room in Nevada as the state has too low a population to enable operators to run a successful online poker business.</p>
<p>Speaking at an interview, D’Arrigo said:<br />
<blockquote>We have to make an assessment on the cost to operate that space. We haven’t ruled it out, but we haven’t given it a green light either. We’re not going to be the first or a pioneer from the state’s perspective.</p></blockquote>
<p>Nevada recently became the <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-news/general/first-real-money-online-poker-room-launched-in-nevada/1873">first US state to launch a licensed online poker room</a> when <strong>Station Casinos</strong> launched an online poker room called UltimatePoker.com. Delaware and New Jersey have also passed online gambling bills and will soon launch live online poker products.</p>
<p>While MGM is closely following licensing procedures in Nevada as well as New Jersey, D’Arrigo and many others feel that either the formation of interstate compacts or federal-level legalization is essential to create larger player pools and more liquidity, which will in turn lead to the generation of revenue worth billions of dollars for state government as well as gambling operators.</p>
<p>Large casino companies prefer either federal-level legalization or interstate gambling compacts to create larger markets and better liquidity. State-level legalization will create a patchwork of different regulations and tax rates.</p>
<p>Some gambling analysts say that the online gambling market of <strong>Nevada</strong> has the capacity to, <strong>generate only around $50 million to $250 million in revenue</strong> annually while New Jersey, which has a larger population, can <strong>generate as much as $1 billion annually</strong>. D’Arrigo said:<br />
<blockquote>Our preference is for something to be done at the federal level. We’re focused on these states by state initiatives, but it makes (operating) more challenging and more complicated. The opportunities are different in each state. Hopefully states will compact with one another and that will create liquidity and critical mass.</p></blockquote>
<p>MGM earned $6.5 million this fiscal year as against its <strong>loss of $217.3 million last year</strong>. The company, along with Boyd Gaming, has entered into partnership deals with <a href="http://www.poker-online.com/poker-room-reviews/bwin-poker">giant online gambling companies such as Bwin.party</a> so that it can grab a share of regulated US markets such as Nevada and <strong>New Jersey</strong>.</p>
<p>MGM, along with <strong>Boyd Gaming</strong>, owns the <strong>Borgata Hotel and Casino</strong>, which is located in New Jersey’s <strong>Atlantic City</strong>. This land casino property will enable both companies to launch online gambling products in New Jersey.</p>
