HearthstoneThere are a number of reasons why poker players are suddenly spending a lot of their time playing Hearthstone. This online collectible card game which was developed by Blizzard Entertainment has been on the market for a little more than a year but has captured a strong fan base with its turn based matches that requires a lot of skill and strategy to win.

Hearthstone was launched in March 2014 and since then has been a huge hit with the poker community as a number of poker pros find it very similar to the game of poker. Hearthstone received a lot of attention at the 2015 BlizzCon when two well known poker players took center stage to participate in an exhibition match as they had earlier admitted to being huge fans of the game.

Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Daniel Negreanu were given the opportunity to test their Hearthstone playing skills and in the end it was Negreanu who walked away with a win. The poker legend stated that he first tried Hearthstone back in May 2015 after he overhead some of his fellow poker players raving about Heartstone. Negreanu stated that he downloaded the game and became so fascinated that he ended up playing eleven straight hours.

Grospellier has been playing Hearthstone for a number of months and finds it highly addictive. He has achieved legend status for the last four consecutive months and would like to take part in the world championship that brings together the top 100 players in a specified region to compete against one another. Although Grospellier would like to be a part of the world championship, it requires a lot of time for one to accumulate sufficient points to break into the top 100 players and time could be a constraint for Grospellier.

Both poker pros have spent a number of months playing the game and state that it is very similar to poker as it is all about strategy, concentration and being able to play for long hours.

Hearthstone is expected to grown in popularity in the coming months and attract a lot more poker players from around the world.

Daniel Negreanu does not believe that poker players will stop playing poker and switch over to Hearthstone because as of now there is not a lot of money to be made playing Hearthstone. In a statement, Negreanu said

It does appeal to poker players in a big way. In our leisure time, almost all the other poker players are playing Hearthstone. I certainly don’t think any professional poker players will leave their income to just play hearthstone. But in addition to their already extensive poker play, it’s just a fun alternative thing to do. I don’t think they would look to do it as a career move, financially
