Super Typhoon HaiyanWhile a number of negative issues have been raised against the online poker industry, one of the biggest benefits of encouraging the legalization of online poker companies is the amount of revenue in taxes that they bring to each state as well as the large amount of donations that they give towards charities, churches and relief operations.

The Philippines was devastated recently when one of the biggest typhoons ever recorded hit the country. Super Typhoon Haiyan caused considerable damage to houses, infrastructure and the death of over 10,000.

The country is in recovery mode and is in desperate need of assistance and relief from overseas.

PokerStars the biggest online poker website in the world immediately decided to respond to this cry for help. The company will rely on its official charity program called Helping Hands and a partnership with CARE International, a global relief charity to start collecting and matching funds that they raise for the Philippines. These funds will then be used to send in water, food, emergency supplies and to help the people of the Philippines recover and get back to a normal life.

PokerStars has also focused on raising awareness amongst its large player database and has provided them with the opportunity to make donations via their online poker software so that it is easy and convenient for them to give. These donations will go directly to CARE International, an organization that is committed to providing assistance to humanitarian efforts when they are hit with natural catastrophes. Whatever amount is raised through these efforts, Poker Stars will then match that amount and then roll out relief efforts in the Philippines.

The Rational Group are the owners of Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker. The Group confirmed that it will soon make provision on the Full Tilt Poker website so that players will also be able to donate via the Full Tilt Poker website. Thus with both Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars raising funds on a global basis, a considerable amount is expected to be raised within the next few days.

PokerStars will offer its players a number of ways to donate towards these relief operations. One of these ways is by launching a dummy tournament that allows players to register and make a buyin. However, no poker is played and whatever money is collected through this dummy tournament will be used for the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund. The tournaments can be found in the Poker Stars lobby and will be available in both Euros and dollars and range from $1 to $1000 enabling players from different parts of the world to make donations as they wish.
